Culture Presentation

Asian Americans

1. Value Formal Education
Success is related to family integrity
                Success = Honor & Prestige
                        Failure = Incurs Shame

 2. Conform to the ideals of authority figures
        Respond to reinforcement from teachers
Expect: Well-Organized, Quiet, Well Structured Educational Environment

3. Schools should be an institution where educators are highly respected.
This means Parents should NEVER inter fear.
Educators who expect parental involvement in their child’s education are incompetent.
Try and assume the role of authority, you will be respected for it.

4. The stereotype that all Asian children are Whiz Kids or geniuses.
This may cause individual problems to be overlooked.
This is false. The reason for the stereotype is because of the values that are impressed upon not their genetic makeup.
5. Informality is not their norm.
In the US we tend to have open discussions and participation grades.
Their culture doesn’t give students a chance to voice their opinion. They will most likely listen rather than     participate.

6. Time and linear schedules are not the norm
You can expect: Tardiness and Missed appointments
This is not a disregard for the teacher’s time; in their culture time is not stressed.

7. Do not mistake their politeness or miss communicate their submissive behavior.
Asians will nod their head to show they are listening, not agreement
They will smile when they are confused or embarrassed not from pleasure
They will refrain from making eye contact out of respect.
Don't rush communication, take it step by step

8. A great education may be the family’s reason for moving to the United States.
Asian high schools and some grade schools only accept the best of the best.
To ensure a good education they move here.
They will gladly go into debt making sure there child has the BEST education money can buy after school tutors.
South Korea is ranked #1 in private spending on education

9. Older people, or any one in power is NEVER addressed by name.
They would only be addressed by title.

10. Religion and religious holidays
Some traditions come from Buddhism even though many now practice Christianity.
Big holidays still celebrated: Buddha's Birthday is in May
Chusok- Korean Thanksgiving
Their calendar maybe based on a lunar year
Children may have more than one birthday a year one solar and one lunar
So there age may not be equal to an American student.

Indian Students
  • Will show a deep respect for teachers and will work well with them
  • Their norm: obedience and humility
  • Interact well with other students
  • Main area of difference: Respect
  • Will look up to all older students and will always rely on their word as truth
  • Will also assume the older student will protect and take care of them
  • We should encourage their independence
  • Students will not make eye contact out of respect
  • Students will try not to lose their heritage; must be encouraged to participate and try new things
